DR. WHO?

Mr. Edi is a total one-of-a-kind, sweet, "let me tell you about my favorite Tv show but I wont watch yours" kind of guy!! Haha, anyone who works with him KNOWS how huge of a DR. WHO fanatic he is.  He has successfully gotten several coworkers into the show as well! So the lot of them came to me and order a surprise cake for his birthday, themed after-you guessed it! DR. WHO.  Knowing absolutely zilch about the show I actually had to do alot of research trying to figure out what the heck I was making.  Its quite difficult to google references images of something that you don't know the name of, because "Dr. Who things" doesn't turn up as many results as you would think.  I was instructed to incorporate a Pair of White Chucks, a Red Rose, a Sonic Screwdriver (finally learned what it was called), and the phrase 'Allonse-y'.  The cake had to be a Tardis Shade of Blue and all the colors conveniently complimented each other once it was all pieced together!! I was so excited to make my little fondant converse again, and was VERY please with how the sonic screwdriver turned out; roughly three hours of detail work itself!  Edi was so surprised and loved his cake, even though he actually hates cake.  But that's okay.  We still love him anyways!

PATRIOTS CELEBRATE THE BIG 5-0!

YET ANOTHER reference from the amazing Evelin, I was contacted by a friend of hers to create a special design in celebration of her Dads 50th Birthday.  She came to me knowing exactly what she wanted; a Football shaped cake with his favorite teams logo across the front of it.  The cake was simple enough - the logo is what took all the time! I hand drew a copy of the logo onto a card stock cutout and then traced it onto fondant, and cut it out again and kept layering onto the backing from there.  It turned out great, and really made the brown football POP!

A BIG MAC FOR THE KINDER-GRAD!

Definitely a one-of-a-kind request, my manager asked me to make a 'Big Mac' cake for his little sons Kindergarten Graduation.  I thought it was such a cute idea!  This cake was very different, needing to fondant each layer individually and then piece everything together, not to mention all of the fondant 'toppings' that went on the burger as well!  The cake turned out so cute and it was alot of fun to make!

GIRLY GRADUATION!

My sweet coworker Alejandra wanted to give a special inspiring gift to her nieces on the graduation.  I had free reign of the design, as long as it was pink! I wanted to incorporate a quote I found by Eleanor Roosevelt, "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." And since the quote was rather long, I chose to keep the cake design simple so the cake didn't end up looking to Busy.  Two shades of pink, simple small polka dots and one pink-tassled graduation cap later- the cake was complete!

MONKEY BUSINESS!

As a Double Birthday, Evelin ordered a unique cake for her brother and her nephew who share the same birthday! Both boys are totally into sweets and junk food, and are two peas in a pod.  She wanted to represent them as monkeys on the cake, and I got to make a Chocolate cake with Chocolate Mousse filling mixed with Oreos and Reeses!! Every chocolate lovers dream right? It was alot of fun making a bunch of miniature sized fondant sweets to decorate around the cake.  I made a birthday cake with colorful candles, tiny Oreos AND frosted donuts! Complete with real Oreo crumbles around the cake!

A BEATLES INSPIRED DRUM SET!

THIS cake was probably one of the largest that I have had to make (and carry!) so far!  My coworker John wanted to get something special and very unique for his brothers birthday celebration.  His brother is a huge BEATLES fan and wanted to incorporate a drum set somehow.  The party was for a large group of people, and so instead of creating a cake with fondant drums on top; we decided to create each different cake as an individual drum! Each cake was decorated around the base with a specific hit album, and the top of the drum displayed the title.  Also incorporated were a set of drum sticks & a golden GIL symbol with a bright 'HAPPY BIRTHDAY' message across it.  This cake-sorry-these FOUR different cakes were a ton of work, and more than 10hours of detail work (mainly the Yellow Submarine inspired design!!) but the result was a set of gorgeous hand crafted and baked from scratch drums that was phenomenal!

LITTLE ELEPHANTS!

A sweet little cake for Evelin's Mom, Evelin asked for the cake to have four elephants representing her mother, herself, and her two older siblings.  Such a cute &simple design around the entire cake, and backed by her mom's favorite color, baby teal!  It made for a SWEET birthday gift!

LITTLE BOY BABY BLOCKS!

Baby showers have got to be one of the best occasions to create a cake.  The possibilities are endless! My friend Tracey came to me asking to create a sweet little design for her dear friends' baby shower and their soon-to-be-born son, Lucas!  More than happy to accept, Tracey and I talked about numerous different designs and ended with a classy modern design to compliment the mommy-to-be.  With a Gorgeous Deep Blue & White Chevron base, the black and white baby blocks POPPED almost as much as the matching blue cake on the inside! The Vanilla cake was dyed blue and filled with a fluffy raspberry chocolate mousse filling; capable of satisfying the most intense sweet cravings!!

THE WALKING DEAD!

An intriguing request from one of my best customers and coworker, Jorge wanted to have a 'Walking Dead' themed birthday cake! He had an idea of hands/arms/zombies trying to get out from a door, that he requested be modeled after his apartment.  After googling some inspirations I got to work creating my very first fondant hands, and after a few tries nailed it! This cake was so much fun to make!! The eerie hands wouldn't be complete without some gory blood all over (red food coloring) which I dipped each of the hands in and smeared across the cake before I set them in place.  To make it look even more forbidding I created fondant chain links and a lock 'latching the door shut' and spray painted them with edible vanilla silver coloring AND painted across the door "DON'T OPEN DEAD INSIDE".  The cake was a humongous hit and I couldn't have been any happier with the results!

CHIC LACE LOVE!

A long time coworker and friend of mine, Raoul, has been commenting about ordering a cake from me for a long time now.  Finally the time came where he needed a cake, for his sweet mothers birthday!  He told me to 'have fun' with the cake design, that he just did not want anything to frilly/girly, that his mom liked more of a classy look.  He also requested 'Happy Birthday JuJu' to be on top of the cake.  I wanted to stick with a black and white design, and opted to try out a new technique...LACE!  Unfortunately I have no lace tools so after reading and watching quite a few different tutorials online, I opted to make lace the hand-made route!  I started by cutting large circles, and working my way into the center of the circle creating a pattern using my fondant knife tools, and all the various sized frosting tips I have!  The work took the better portion of four hours in order to get the rhythm down and make sure all of those darn little circles cut out all the way! But the finished look was even better than I had hoped, AND I learned a new technique out of it! This is what I love SO much about what I do!  Thank you Raoul 'Rizzle' for your order!

LANA DEL REY INSPIRATION!

Miss Evelin came to me last month requesting a special little cake for her younger sister's birthday.  She explained to me how crazy her sister was about the new artist Lana Del Rey and all of her music.  Evelin asked if I would be able to incorporate that into a cake, of course!  She was amazing and found me exactly what I was looking for - a Lana Del Rey silhouette.  I was able to create a card stock stencil by hand from the picture she sent me and use it to cut out a black fondant silhouette of Lana Del Rey!  Adorned on top was a 3D Bright Red Flower and Black Sparkly piping gel 'Lana Del Rey' along the front/side of the cake just like on her Paradise Album.

A BOLD CHEVRON BIRTHDAY!

Liz is a bold character, to say the least!  Already having ordered numerous cakes for other people from me, this time she was ordering a cake for herself!  She told me the flavors, and gave me free reign of the cake design.  Knowing her personality I wanted to do something bold and really eye-catching! What better than a Chevron print cake?  Red is one of her favorite colors so I paired it with black and white, offsetting the red and white cake with a red and black bow.  Liz completely adored her cake, and what made it even better when I delivered it was her other coworkers thought I had purchased it somewhere! Happy Birthday Liz!

POLKA-DOT BABY LOVIN'!

Another order from the wonderful Escobar's, Claudia contacted me and explained that her best friend was pregnant, and that she was going to throw her a baby shower! She asked for a cake to have for the special occasion and I was more than happy to help out.  Plus I've been wanting to design a baby shower cake for a while now!  She sent me a few pictures she had seen that she liked for ideas, and her favorite one was a pink polka dot cake with baby shoes on top! It was extremely cute, although I wasn't sure about how to create the shoes!  After searching around to find some ideas and techniques, I stumbled upon converse shoe stencils! Too perfect.  I chose to incorporate a soft gray color, and two different shades of pink like Claudia had asked.  The shoes came out even better than I had hoped, I was SO excited, and when Claudia saw them she was thrilled too!

LEAHS WHIMSICAL BIRTHDAY CAKE!

My Sweet friend Leah celebrated her birthday last week and I wanted to make her a very special, unique cake.  It was a complete surprise so I asked her boyfriend Kyle for her favorite flavor cake (Tiramisu, yum!).  For the design I wanted to do something very different than normal, and something that represented Leah.  Leah is a sweetheart and a loving free spirit! I came up with a whimsical fondant design incorporating bright vibrant colors that I know Leah likes.  As much as she is a sweetheart she also packs a personality *punch* so I finished the cake off with a large black fondant '26 & BADASS' on the front of her cake!  When I showed up at the bar with her cake in hand she was SO excited, the bar staff was fantastic helping me set up with candles and the whole place sung her 'Happy Birthday'! It was a wonderful surprise, and even better people thought I had purchased the cake from a bakery! Everyone that had a slice thought my tiramisu recipe was fantastic, most importantly the birthday girl ! Happy Happy Birthday Leah!

SWEET PRINCESS CUPCAKES!

Second Year in a row that I've been asked to make Dinet's Birthday cake!  This year Malleli, her older sister and a friend of mine, chose to do dainty princess cupcakes instead.  She requested plain cupcakes, with the exception that she did want one golden fondant princess crown topper for the birthday girl.  Dinet loves anything pink, so we kept the Vanilla cake its natural color (last year we did an ombre pink cake!), but chose to add a little coloring into the frosting and it turned a gorgeous pale pink that Malelli and her sister loved!

CARNIVAL FIRST BIRTHDAY CAKE!

Baby Joaquin turned One everybody!! This sweet little boy's mama planned a big Carnival-themed bash to celebrate his first birthday, and of course she needed a very special cake!  Germaine came to me with her request, and a pretty solid idea of what she wanted incorporated in the cake already.  She asked for a two tier festive cake, specifically with fondant circus animals around the cake, and her son as the ringmaster on top!! I was so excited to create her cake, and knew I had a huge challenge in front of me!! I came up with the exact design and color scheme I wanted on the base of the cake, and what animals to incorporate and where!  Baby Joaquin was posted on top decked out in a ringmaster suit, bow tie and top hat too!  Germaine loved the sketches I showed her and I got to work.  I designed the animals out of a fondant and gumpaste mixture that way they held their form more than normal, which worked fantastic.  I made a fondant seal with a clown nose and ruffled polka dot collar, an adorable giraffe standing along the bottom tier, and a baby lion sitting next to Baby Joaquin on the top!  I added the iconic red and white circus stripes to replicate a tent on the top tier, and the bottom tier was a vibrant turqouise base with bright yellow flags hanging across spelling out 'J-O-A-Q-U-I-N'.  Germaine was thrilled with her cake order, not to mention the sinfully sweet Two Dozen Tres Leches con Dulce De Leche Cupcakes that she ordered !

SUPER NERD CUPCAKES!

Evelin came to me again this month in need of some sweet treats for her boyfriend.  She really wanted to incorporate a lot of fun personal things between them to make it special.  What do the have most in common? Their total love for nerdy super hero things! Evelin did most of the leg work for what she wanted on the designs for the toppers, and she gave me some fantastic ideas that represented the couple!  A World of Warcraft Logo, fondant Speech bubbles of people yelling (Evelin and her boyfriend are loud!), the Batman Icon, two Death Stars saying the famous lines between Leia and Luke 'I Love You' & 'I Know', Harley Quinn Mask & a Joker Card, a Luigi face to represent her boyfriend's lookalike and finally a fondant bench, where they shared their first kiss!  Such original sweet ideas, not to mention so much fun to make! Evelin's boyfriend practically devoured all of the cupcakes when she gave them to him, he loved them so much! Thank you for your continued business Evelin! I love catering your special occasions!

A LITTLE EEYORE VALENTINE LOVE!

As part of his original order as a gift to his wife, my friend and coworker Jorge asked to save part of the original birthday order as a Valentine's day surprise!  His sweet wife Claudia is a total Eeyore fan, and Jorge gave me free reign over the design of the cake! I chose to keep the cake very simple and did an abstract version of Eeyore, attaching a fondant Eeyore tail on the back of the cake complete with his signature pink fondant bow!  I topped the cake off with a sweet little message from him, " Love You Pollolla' (her family nickname since she was little).  The cake turned out absolutely adorable and they loved it!

ANGRY BIRD CUPCAKES!

Another order from my Best Customer Evelin, she asked for a special order of half a dozen cupcakes for her little nephews birthday!  She explained just how crazy this little kid is for the game, and ANYTHING with those birds on it!  Tee-shirts, toys, you name it.  So of course his cupcakes would be!  She asked to make them super chocolatey and kid friendly, only asking that I incorporate his name,  'Brandon' on them somehow.  Since 'Brandon' doesn't exactly fit on a cupcake, I chose instead to make a fondant 'B' out of wooden logs, just like the structures in the game! I also made the Red Bird, the Black Bird, one of the Green Pigs, two Blue Birds and a Golden Egg! Brandon absolutely LOVED his cupcakes, as you can see below!

FIRE FIGHTER MICKEY INSPIRED CAKE!

An acquaintance of one of my Best Customers Evelin, contacted me and asked me to make a very special birthday cake for her boyfriend who was a fire fighter and a huge Mickey Mouse fan! More than happy to oblige I was thrilled to make a fire fighter themed cake and accepted the challenge to incorporate Mickey Mouse without making it look childish.  I searched around to find inspiration for my design and when I designed the sketch, my customer loved it!  I bought some new decorating tools that I was so excited to use on the cake, they were beyond perfect! I created fondant fireman boots, a fireman helmet and a long winding firehouse that went around the entire cake.  The outside of the cake was wrapped in red brick printed fondant (thanks to my new tool) and I added some black fondant lettering with her boyfriends favorite number & 'Happy Birthday' on the front. I chose to incorporate Mickey Mouse silhouettes on the front plate of the fireman helmet and on the top of the cake beneath the boots and helmet on top.  The cake turned out wonderfully, I was so thrilled!

MEGANS WILD BIRTHDAY CAKE!

Last year I made Megan's Birthday Cake, a small 6" red velvet cake with simple daisy flowers and a monogrammed 'M' on the front.  This year her boyfriend asked me to make a large two tiered cake that they were taking to Vegas to celebrate her birthday! I was more than thrilled, and Raul was a huge help describing his idea for the design and what flavors she wanted in the cake.  The best part? She had no idea!  Megan has a gorgeous Bengal Cat named Lola and is obsessed with her Leopard Print!  So immediately we knew that the cake would be decked out in the design.  Raul requested that we incorporate some dark red, another one of Megan's favorites.  I added a large dark red fondant flower on top of the cake, and decorated around each of the bases with a twisted red fondant rope that gave a great 'Pop' of color throughout!  I also added 'MEGAN' along the side in a circus/carnival-type font in black (The 'M' was lined with red polka dots to make it stand out!) and the whole name really stood out against all the red and brown hues.  Megan and Raul loved the cake that he ordered! Happy Happy (now belated) Birthday Hun! Can't wait to make your cake next year!

SPIDERMAN & HELLO KITTY CUPCAKES!

Vanessa was one of my favorite coworkers before she left our store, but I was lucky enough to get to bake a special order of cupcakes for her before she went!  The order was for a dozen chocolate cupcakes that were going to be for both her aunt, and her little brother!  So six of the cupcakes were to represent Hello Kitty and the other six were designed to represent Spider Man! Such a fun design and SUCH a delicious combination!

JAMESON CELEBRATION!

My Sweet friend Leah requested a special cake as a gift for her coworker/boss; a Jameson Bottle! Having already done a Jameson shaped cake, I was familiar with the technique and design that the cake required, so it took much less time!  The cake was for quite a few people so I needed to make it a little wider than would be normally proportional, but overall the cake turned out great! Somewhat like a chubby Jameson bottle! The cake was Chocolate & Vanilla Checkerboard throughout, with Chocolate Marshmallow Cream Cheese Frosting! This was the first combination of the two that I have had, and WOW is it delicious!

IPHONE CAKE!

One of my very good friends and long time coworkers, Ruben, just celebrated his 24th birthday.  If you know Ruben, then you know how much he Despises Apple products.  Another good friend &coworker of mine, also Rubens BEST friend had already put a ton of thought into his birthday and requested for me to make Rubens birthday cake almost two months in advance.  And of COURSE....we had to make it an iPhone cake.  Ruben had no idea he was finally going to get to try one of my cakes, and together, Aram and I were able to sneakily find out what his favorite kind of cake was.  Aram went even farther beyond having me make a cake of something Ruben doesn't like, but on the board under the cake had me write " U ATE IT." for him to see when he finished the cake, and also make a text message bar across the top as if the cake was receiving a text saying "From Aram, Happy Birthday Bro" (their armenian joke) I was able to incorporate other tiny details like the Google Calendar icon '24' for his birthday, and that he had '117' text messages because 1/17 is his birthday.  All of the iPhone icons were So much fun to make and when Aram showed up and surprised him with the cake Ruben couldn't have been more excited and thought the whole thing was hilarious!  Happy Happy Birthday Ruben !

POKER CAKE!

A request from one of my dear friends Isa, I got to create a Very fun Poker themed cake!  With so many different ideas and options for the design-she was awesome enough to let me decide on the entire decor!  I opted for a felt table green base, hand made playing cards/poker hand on top and TONS of stacked fondant poker chips!  The cake was colorful and bright and was so much fun to make for her.  Not to mention delicious!!
